nice, thanks :)
what kind of plaster did you use for casting?

I wonder if resin would work better.

@everyone else: thanks, much obliged! :)

The plaster is a standard synthetic variant that is quite a bit tougher than the generic hobbystuff. I found it very durable.

Resin is definitely better in terms of detail. However, I have developed an intense dislike of resin. It is stressful, messy and potentially bad for your health as it is very poisonous. For terrain projects, I'd go with tough plaster any day.

Personally, if you are going to start moulding and casting something (you've made) I would suggest you use silicone rubber. Plastecene or play-do is ok for quick one off moulds, however, when you lift the master from the plastecene, you will get a little distortion of the edges plus resin likes to adhere to it unless you use a decent release agent. I would suggest you get yourself a polyurethane fast cast resin if you are going down the resin route. It is a little more expensive but worth it (a 2 part equal mix by weight/volume and demould in around 30 - 60 mins, quicker if you want, but I would leave it in the mould longer if they are thin sections). I would stay away from general purpose casting polyester resins unless you are casting large volumes and have a handle on resin casting. They generally stink, require more degassing and will stay tacky if you make a mistake and dont add enough catalyst or stir it enough or can be brittle if you add too much! If you are going for plaster, I would use Crystacal <sp> or Herculite. They are more hard wearing and can take quite a bit of punishment before chipping. They are cheaper to produce than resin and can be carved and converted easier than resin pieces. I used to do a fair bit of 28mm scenery I made from Crystacal years ago, it was cheap to produce and your moulds last ages without deterioration.

If you want any more info, don't hesitate to drop me a pm and I'll try and give you more detailed advice if needed.

It was my understanding that "synthetic" plaster was "more durable". There are humongous amounts of variants and brands of variable availability of durable stuff of course. I found that what I bought at a reasonable cost was surprisingly durable.
