Hi,

I am seriously thinking of buying a 3D printer but I am still a total newb about the subject. Those who know about 3D printing, could you help me out :). What brand is the best for home printing at the moment, or is this even the right time to invest in such a machine?

My budget for the machine will be 2-3k€.

please ask, if you want me to tell more facts about the use etc.

Get a laser liquid resin printer. The z step is finer as is the spot size. the resin is more expensive currently. The print bed is a consumable and resin is around a 100 per liter.

Just search kickstarter you'll find one. I have a form labs coming and an fsd from Vegas. The for labs I will use for large items, buildings and terrain. The fsd is resin and will be for dudes, 6 to 20 mm.

Hi!

I've been looking at this for a while and I think the technology is there, all it needs is to go done in price a tad. I predict getting one in 3 years.

Couple more years and things will be incredible in the home 3d printer category...i think right now the detail you might look for in a 6mm model is sadly reserved for larger, more costly machines. Best i've seen is making terrain and other larger items. But's DEFINITELY coming sooner than people think!

I would print scenery mainly, not 6mm miniatures. But yes, I think it's better to get 3D skills now and wait for better "home office" printers

If it's just to print scenery, you might want to check out the printrbot simple. I think it's $299. Can definitely print small terrain pieces. I think build volume is 4" cubed. I'd link for you but on phone... :)

thanks Sgt! But what is the level of detail? Is the surface too grainy?

Interesting topic. I have also guessed that one of those liquid resin printers is the way to go. However, I have not seen anyone try it to print 6mm minis yet. Is there anyone outthere with actual experience?

You'll be able to see the layers, but they're very thin. Check my toeg for a few examples. Not suitable for minis, but scenery is fine.

I believe Brumbaer is printing 6mm with liquid resin in his thread here:

He's using the B9 Creator:
