You're right, Malika's dropships would work well! I have a couple ideas I'll be working on, one is to make a count-as thunderhawk marker with a single stormbird on a 2cm base...

Finally, some of my ships have been painted! And thanks for mentioning me on the topic ;)

Well duh that I'm mentioning you! :) Credit should be given where credit is due! That, and I really hope it will lure people to your store. :)

Much obliged!

Now, to thank you, a couple of pics of my attempt at a pre-heresy volatile that could count as a thunderhawk marker :)

The model is heavily inspired by some pictures that I found online; the square you see in the pictures is 2cmx2cm, and as the model is supposed to be bigger than the thunderhawks, I made it roughly 19mm wide and 18mm long:

Opinions welcome!

It looks okay as some random space transport but it really doesn't fit at all well as a Stormbird proxy.

To quote from the 40k wiki entry on Stormbirds (based on information from them from the BL and FW books):
They “have missiles slung under both wings and a powerful kinetic cannon mounted on its nose.”
“A Stormbird's wings could be folded or collapsed back against the Stormbird's chassis in some manner when the aircraft was not in-atmosphere.”
Stormbirds are described as being sleeker and more advanced than the blocky Thunderhawks.

I'm also not clear on comparative size but a Stormbird has a transport capacity roughly 3 times larger than a Thunderhawk, so should be roughly 3 times bigger.

Seems you were inspired by this, pretty sweet!

Personally I imagined the Stormbird to be some sort of larger hybrid of a Thunderhawk and the Aquila Lander, but that's just me.

Also note that in the background the Stormbird is also known as the Warhawk VI. Meaning there are at least five other Warhawks that have gone before it, meaning you've got some leeway in the design of course!

As for the transport capacity, I remember it being able to carry around 100 marines, but according to Lexicanum they can carry up to 50 marines. A Thunderhawk can carry 30 marines, just to give you a comparison! I'd be very way to what 40kwiki and such (even Lexicanum, despite their accuracy having been improved lately) claim, try to stick to the official sources.

Yay, lots of replies!

@GlynG - I see! I think I can add the prow cannon, and the underslung missiles should be no problem (although considering the size of the model, I'll have to exaggerate them a bit); I'm not sure about the folding wings, though, I can't think of a way they would look good...
Sizewise the ship is around twice as long and wider than BFG thunderhawks, so it should be fine!

@ malika - Yep, that's the inspiration, when I saw that picture it was love at first sight! I think I could make a version with more "aquila-shaped" wings; in fact, that's what I was planning to do for my Blood Angels!
Different versions will be made, for sure :)

@ jimmyzimms - Thank you, I'm glad you like it! Of course I'll make the gellar field generator batteries available separately, if anyone wants to put them on a standard cruiser :)

Hmm, the Thunderhawk also has foldable wings (at the back, top parts), so it's not that far-fetched to try something similar for your Stormbird.

Regarding the Aquila wings, what about an eagle head as a prow as well? :D That way the ship will be slightly more ornate (how very Imperial!), but at the same time get a more unique character, less risk of GW's IP people to step in.

Update time!

I've made three version of the ship, all armed with prow cannon and wing-mounted missiles.

Version 1 is basically the one you saw already, upgunned:

For the secon one, I tried inverting the direction of the wings; I don't know if I like it or not...

The third one is the Malika pattern :)

@ malika - I thought about the eagle head, I'll see what I can do, although I think it would be better to keep it just for Fulgrim's storbird :D

Like the third one; It looks like variable-geometry wings.

For compact storage on a carrier, perhaps mount the engines on top of each other (in a square pattern), close to the hull?

You're right, it does look like that!

I can try and change the engine arrangement; this way they would end up with a total wingspan of roughly 16.5mm...

I'm really digging the "Malika Pattern", personally I'm a real sucker for inverted wings, I've been doing something similar for my fighter craft.

By the way, what about replacing that twin linked cannon on the back for a single barreled one?
