Now for the sour notes: why did I call it my most beautiful mistake?

Because it is, simply put, too big to be affordable.

Even acknowledging that battleships lately are hard to come by, this guy would end up costing around 110 Euros on Shapeways, and this would be more than even I would be willing to pay, if it weren't for the wish to see my creation in the flesh...

How come it costs so much, you ask? Well, I went a little "trigger happy" with the size....:

Now I'll probably put it up for sale on Shapeways anyway, but I'm not expecting any sales (as it happened with my super heavy transports already... :( )

Cheers guys, opinions welcome as always!

Thanks Jimmy, I'm glad you like it!

I was wondering how to arrange the armaament\bridge combinations on shapeways; I was thinking on using the first bridge on the older combinations (batteries+torpedoes and hangar+batteries+antennas), and using the Taj Mahal bridge on the newer ones (lances+huge cannon and one of each+antennas).

What do you think?

In what material did you print the model? FXD or FUX?

Hey there!

I printed it in Frosted Ultra Detail; I haven't tried Extreme Detail yet, I'll probably try it on some ordnance!

I'd like to post a couple of pictures of something different from the usual; a painted model!

Some time ago I found again an old angry crab that I received in a trade a few years ago, and I decided to sculpt and have printed a couple of custom bits for it; specifically, a head and a power flail (power scourge?).

Here is the complete model! It would look great if only I could take a decent picture!

No job is too big, no fee is too big.

It looks beautiful, and definitely not just a ship but a mini worthy of a rogue trader. I can't afford it myself, but I'm really glad you're going ahead and posting it anyway. Keep in mind that prices on Shapeways will gradually drop; when eventually it starts to become more affordable you might want to consider re-posting it so people will notice it in there.

I like the taj mahal inspiration. I'd been thinking myself of a ship inspired by hellenistic architecture-- kind of a cartoon parthenon in space. This uses a different aesthetic to scratch the same itch.

Thank you for the kind words!

Well, I think you will appreciate this alternate bridge, too!

This starter as a joke, as a homage to my hometown; I still have to decide what to make of the roof, but it gives the idea already!

Since cost is the problem, what about trying lower levels of detail?

The detail isn't the issue. 3D printing costs are mainly a function of material and volume*. I could print something the size and shape of that battleship above but using only modeling primitives and no details and it'd be about the same price (actually more as the detail actually removes material from the print).

* note: ^that's^ overly simplistic but gets the fundamental idea across

The value proposition in 3D printing is not making things cheap. It's instead having flexibility and ease of realizing a digital creation. In an actual retail environment/scenario they'd be used as part of the mastering process that then would leverage traditional methods of casting to create the actual items for sale/distribution. That's not a cheap thing to do and requires an up-front investment and commitment to do it and make a profit.
