For years I've been wanting to create my own ships. I started scratchbuilding some Ork ships (see some of those results here), but after that I stopped building ships for a long time.

Now with the wonderful opportunities of 3d printing and CNCing, I decided to give it another shot.

I've always been in love with the Homeworld ships, so I started designing something inspired by it.

Slightly updated version:

At the moment the designs are done in Sketchup, but the plan is to convert to a format that can be printed.

Now, I need your help. At the moment the ship is armed with launch bays, that carry tons of fighter craft and such, and torpedo launchers (on the top of the ship). But it lacks a bit of extra punch. I like the idea of some sort of defensive weapon or some energy weapon. However, I'm not that big a fan of putting turrets on the ship. Anyone of you got some suggestions?

Maybe something like phaser banks from startrek. Or a movement tracks grid with moving engery emitters on it. But you don't need stuff like that with the big distances in space.

maybe just bull's eye/porthole with a laser behind it?

Yeah I like the idea of laser blisters. One they're visually interesting and , two, are distinctive from BFG. Go do an image search for Zentradi ships for some details (Battleship Yamato had similar blisters). Like this stuff!!

I love you, man.

Maybe a big off-sided spinal mount gun?

On topic: my own dupe of the freighter from HW 2

I kinda caved in with the turrets. They're growing on me...now I need to make the rest of the ship just as detailed though...

Yeah I'm thinking you and Todd need to form up like Voltron on this and make a whole line :)

I'm totally Grim-Darked out on my space ships and started selling off my extras. These are more my style right now.

I've been toying with Philip Sibbering (who used to do artwork for GW, but has also been reinterpreting the 40k universe) on creating a new setting/framework named SCIROR. These ships are part of that project. More on that, and their background can be found in this discussion. The thread delves into some other stuff as well, but the later pages are almost exclusively about space ships.

i find the turrets kinda boring and they have mayor flaw. when the enemy comes directly from above you have to turn the whole ship. look at this real rhein metl laser turret.

but even this would need big adjustments for space. But the turret design is more on the line with your general design apropche. Not naval inspired and more like a real spaceship.

I've kept the turrets as they are for now. I would like to change them because I'm not that happy about them anymore (even though they're probably the best turrets I've ever drawn :P) Need to ponder a bit more about that I guess! :)

Here is the latest update on the ship by the way:
LINK - Because the picture is too big to be posted on the forum

Also, I spoke to my friend with the CNC, he isn't sure if the machine will be able to cut the model since it's going to be very small. Which leaves me to ponder a bit. What can I do? I know there are 3d printing services out there, but most of the 3d printed stuff I've seen seems to lack in detail (even stuff that is meant to be detailed). Furthermore, it's going to be rather expensive to print without hollowing out the model (and even then it will most likely be expensive). Also, hollowing the model out might not be such a great idea for a prototype if I would want to cast it later on (pressure can break the model).

I remember in the past GW used to have these '3 times as bigger' versions of their models, I vaguely remember reading about it in a WD once that it was part of the production process. Anybody got more info or experiences regarding that?

I've been thinking about the details, and well... I'm making the ship rather detailed, in some cases the final version will even have 0.001mm parts. Which is all very cool of course, but you wouldn't even be able to see it.

So I was thinking. I'll keep making this model super detailed, and once it's done just make a copy of the model (which will be the one that will be made BFG scale), and start removing too small parts.

How detailed should I go though? I was thinking of at most going at 0.1mm, or very maybe at 0.125mm.

EDIT: here a tiny update on the ship. Sorry that I had to post another link, but the pictures are a bit too big for this forum to handle.

In the meanwhile...

Started working on the prow, meaning that the main design is almost finished. Just need to build the front plate of the prow, and add some additional details to the distortion engine and exhausts area...

Is this an original artwork done by you? or is it a copy of an existing artwork?

0.1mm detail is printable by Shapeways, I have resin cast models of prints with detail that small, you'd loose this finest detail if metal casting though.

A hollow Rhino sized tank might cost around $12 to print from Shapeways in frosted ultra detail.

The people doing the upcoming Age of Tyrants game are meant to be using a new process that can print finer detail than 0.1mm. I'm curious about it and messaged them last night to try to find out more about it.
