With the current and future possibilities of 3D printing I thought it would be neat to learn some 3D design, So I have been screwing around a bit in 3Ds max as of late. Before I get any deeper into it though I was wondering what people consider the best software for modelling tabletop stuff? I'm mostly a infantry guy if that makes any difference.

Also does anyone know any good guides that focuses on miniature design?

blendr is very popular

Sketchup is great, but not for tiny resolution or for curves :) I still like it though.

Wings3D is pretty good. Sizing stuff looks like it's a bit obtuse, but otherwise it seems to be fine. Exports to pretty much whatever format you would want too.

I haven't used it to make a 3D printable thing just yet though, just assorted spaceship stuff.
