im trying to get into sculpting my own models for the fun of it. i have gotten pretty good ad sculptris and sketchup to model things but i feel that they both aren't that great at modeling some things. sculptris is pretty organic and its generally not worth trying to smooth every thing out whilst sketchup is the opposite and gets a bit frustrating when trying to model curves and thins that are a bit more organic.

does any one know of a good program to use? i realy like the stile of onslaught miniatures if any one knows that program they use.

Iirc Deacon from onslaught uses soldworks

Moment of inspiration (MoI3D) is good and has a 30-day free trial (I think)

I really liked MoI, it was a breeze. Some other options have a bumpier user journey, or so I gathered.

Puah. thats a hard question because there are so many tools out there that are really different.

I short you cna use nearly every 3d graphics tool to achiev what you want.

so the hard part is to find the right tool for you.

My personal prefarence is blender. I started with cinema 4d and maya. But I never liked them to much. Blender was the tool i really started to understand 3D. So it will likly be a journey.
Blender has a huge community and incredible amoutn of tutorials.

While some dont like blenders UI its super fast to wrk with and nearly all tools have a drawback of some kind.

You could also have a look at 3DCoat. It's sculpting but you can also make cool hardsurface designs using it's voxel tech.

You can also use tinkerCAD or other more focsed small tools. It mostly depends on what you want. Maybe start with simple buildings and print using shapeways. Just to learn the whole process of printing.

I'd re-iterate what DasBilligeAlien said

I taught Blender for 5 years, have used Maya / Max and many moons ago use lightwave. without exception ALL of them have good and bad points. 3D software is complicated enough that there will always be annoying bugs you have to live with.

Try a few and see which feels more intuitive to you.. 5 years with Blender made me quite comfortable but by no means an expert but has been mentioned, the community support is exceptional

Whatever you choose, expect a learning curve and build up slowly, don't try and run before you can walk

thanks guys i might give blender another go. the problem i had with blender and i heard this a lot from other people is that the interface is just different from all the other programs i know. but it would aslo come in handy for a lot of things it seems.

also tinker cad seems like actually it would be perfect for infantry as they wont need any details.

I tried Blender and just couldn't get past the GUI, so now I use Sketchup for everything.

Does sketchup output decent stl files now?

Just get a plug-in for that. Importing stl still really sucks though. :(

I'd just like to thank everyone who participated in this discussion. I have tried out blender. It is not the easiest thing to work with, but I've managed to convert some stl files to print multiples of smaller pieces, instead of one at a time.
