The start of a thread for my painted 3mm Vanguard. Some recently painted Novan Elites, painted as Sons of Horus. On 6cm by 4cm bases.

Very nice! how do you do the dry/broken earth look on the bases? It looks like dried river bed and is very effective.

The broken earth is games workshop's Agrellan Earth. Put on about between one and two millimetres of the stuff and after an hour it will start to crack.

The figures look superb. How did you go about painting them?

Fantastic ;) How hard does that earth stuff dry , i.e is it at risk of the cracked bits breaking off ?

To paint them I undercoated them in white spray (GW corex white) then given a watery coat of Vallejo sky green, given a wash of watery GW Nuln Oil, given a highlight of Vallejo sky green then given two highlights of Vallejo light green blue. I was broadly inspired by this guide: http://www.twolandscreative.com/blog/in ... g-tutorial

As for the cracked bases, the cracks never fall off. I spray the bases black then give them a separate coat with an earthy brown, so the Agrellan Earth has a lot to stick to.

Thanks for the tips on the bases! Crackle paint falling off has been the thing keeping me from using it more!

Use a brush on lacquer to seal it onto the base properly and prevent flaking off. I use AP strong tone quickshade on all my bases prior to using crackle paints already. I use it to give it a hard impermeable protective layer over my scultped dirt/bomb craters/ext as they're built just using spackle and vallajeo sandy paste and toilet paper mache' which can't take abuse on it's own (dullcoat ain't going to cut it there). You can get away with using clear wood lacquer from the hardware store thinned a bit with some turpinoid if you don't care to pay much.

Great work Sam.

By the way that would be Novan Elites not Regulars mate.

What's next on the list for paint?

Ah yes, Elites rather than Regulars, could have been a Freudian slip, the unconscious dreaming of future projects.

As for what is next, need to base up these guys. I have a full army painted but the GW crackle paints are causing me frustration. Great when they work but I keep getting inconsistency between different pots in colour and size of cracks. Experimenting with alternatives. In the meantime, some cybershadows are forthcoming, hopefully get to posted up soon.
