It's been a while since I tackled any of my games projects, or at least threw them on the site here. But you must not think I'm just out of BED, as they say. For starters I cleaned up my workspace, which had been my own personal Eye of Terror for far too long. Strong recommendation for Gamecraft organizing racks, by the way!

And speaking of Chaos, here's a little preview of what I've been working on since then...

Hah! It's laser-cut 3mm plywood, white glue, and sand. Gets the job done, though!

My money is on a drybrush for the lighter/yellowish bits and a spot wash or two of a dark brown.

It's just three different colors of paint that I apply at the same time with the same brush, so they blend. My go-to colors are Tanned Leather, Dark Highlights and Khaki Highlights (Reaper colors).

Hey, when and where can we get our hands on those?

They're from Vanguard, and I think they're going to be available "Real Soon Now," probably a matter of a few weeks at most.

The Sons of Horus are preparing for their assault on the Loyalist-held desert world of Ukara Prime.

The full force of armor, basecoated:

Closeup of the model details, which are superb! First, the proxy Rhino (which in all honesty I like better than the "canon" Rhino):

A proxy Land Raider (Mauler) which, again, I think is sleeker than the "real" Land Raider:

And proxy Predators, in both Plain Vanilla and Annihilator flavors:

I'm painting them all with Reaper colors. The basecoat is Deep Ocean, diluted 5:1 with Flow Improver. It acts kind of like a stain, and gives nice dark shadows. Since I'm building the whole army at once I'm being more systematic about this than is usual for me. Next up is the middle-coat applied with a "wet" drybrush (i.e., very heavy color).

The nails I used are 6d coated roofing nails. White glue holds the figures in place very nicely and pulls free afterwards with out damage. The pegboard is by GameCraft Miniatures and is a serious organizational lifesaver. I love it good.

Oh, and here's one for the Group-Mind: who would be the classic "nemesis" for the Sons of Horus to be fighting? Blood Angels? Dark Angels? Imperial Fists? I'm going to have to cook up an OPFOR pretty soon, once the 3mm line officially hits the market and my previews begin to cry out for an opponent to fight. So I'm curious what people might suggest (or might want to see me paint!)

I've even considered ginning up my own II Legion for them to fight. Hmmm?

To be continued!

Nice work on these so far!

Perhaps one of the loyalist chapters massacred on Istvaan? Iron hands, Salamanders or Raven Guard (painting up a mix of 2-3 of these could be an option too). That was an apocalyptic scale battle involving huge numbers.

Hm. Maybe.

I've actually considered that greatest of all heretical things: inventing my own Legion. Perhaps the lost II Legion?

Yeah probably not. In the end I'll most likely choose based on which provide the best color contrast, in which case the Blood Angels, as gothy as they may be, do rise obligingly to the top of the heap. Although I'm told by Knowledgeable Personnages that Imperial Fists would be more my style.

Or maybe I'm just nervous about painting a black color scheme.
