Many years ago I did someone wrong.
I was young and thought I knew better.
I dismissed and ridiculed them without much thought.
I said bad things about them.
I though that what I had at the time was better.
Almost 20 years later I have grown older and wiser.
I have looked them up again and I see things I like.
What I see before me has caught my attention.

I am sorry Epic 40k. If you will have me I would like to try again and I will not be as rash this time.

Back to reality.

So, I have been a long time player and fan of 2nd Ed/NetEpic, and with the ongoing plan to overhaul the rules I have been checking out what the other systems have to offer.
Obviously back in the day I turned my nose up at Epic 40k as it was to "simple" and wasn't proper Epic ;) but in the last 20 years of playing all manner of games I have come to appreciate the simpler systems, one of my favourite games at the moment is x-wing and the mechanics of that are very simple.
Now reading through the Epic 40k rules again after all this time, I find myself liking what I am reading. This has come as quite a surprise to me as I have been a big advocate of more detail and more options in NetEpic. The more broad brush stats and shooting/combat (though I have a few reservations) along with the very flexible army building system seem pretty cool.

So at some point in the future I will try and give it a go against one of my friends and see if it is what I am looking for in my games of Epic.

Matt

I welcome anyone who has come over to the light, i hope you find it to your liking this time round.

The older i get the simpler i want the rules to be and E40k is exactly my cup of tea.

Yes Epic40K has a lot of nice features, and basic system worked brilliantly for BFG too of course.

Hi!

Your Heresy has been noted and reported to the Inquisition.

Expect the punitive squad shortly.

So sayeth the "primarch". ;)

Jest aside, there are some good mechanics in there. I like the flier rules and they will be incorporated with modifications into NE6.

The firepower table reminds me of BFG batteries and anti tank shots of lances.

Will see after some games if it plays as well as it looks ;)

E40k came out before BFG so that's why there's a similarity.

E40K was the beginning of sleek. It took the blows you so eloquently described so that other systems could run their evolutionary course.

Anyway, better late than never. Welcome.

No worries, I did the exact same thing lol

I never thought Epic 40k to be simple. Thinking abstractly is harder to do than to accept what is going on on the table. And plus, Epic 40k is very unforgiving. Make a big mistake and you probably wont recover. Whereas in AT/SM1 and SM2/TL, there is a gradual erosion of targets and even a few remaining units in a beaten down formation can offer something. But in Epic 40k, make a wrong move with a detachment and you will lose it.

It also involves a lot of number crunching.

I think Epic 40k appears simpler because of the unit stats lacking a name for most units weapons, but thats no different than in SM2/TL with marines shooting their bolters when we all know they also carry heavy weapons and assault weapons. 1 Dice for 50cm just represents their firepower to me.

But even still, its a very interesting game.
