Hi, I'm new to tac comms, I've never started an epic army before, let alone stripped a fully painted one and I always finish things I start.... Ok, that may be a lie, but this TOEG will be different. Moving on...

Once again I'm back, struck down by the epic painting bug and I've been somewhat hooked on the iron hands play testing and playtesting Fattdex's awesome 30k modification.

Of course playtesting is much more fun with painted armies so I've started painting my long suffering space marine collection. Its a mix of old and new, I started painting these in Jan for a tournament, managing to paint a 3k list in about 3 days! Needless to say they quality was somewhat lacking so I'm now taking a little more time with them.

The following is my efforts over the easter break, next up is going back over the first bunch i painted in Jan to bring them up to the same standard. I'm also having some difficulty photographing the black and white, the high contrast seems to make them either too bright or too dark. I probably need to take some shots in daylight with a better camera.

First up is some OOP Medusa

I then did some old Space Marine era speeders to add to my epic 40k era ones.

This one is of the rhino I use for my supreme commander, probably needs a skull or cog on the top doors but that can wait for now.

Next I painted up a model I got as a gift last year, this will become an objective with some tech marines and support vehicles in attendance:

Finally I thought it was about time I got some titan support for my boys in black and silver, this would have to be one of my oldest, collected back in the late 80s. A warlord of the Legio Ignatum, fresh from refit on Mars, ready to deal death to the legions of the traitor Horus... raawwwwWWW!

i rushed this guy a bit, the banding is messy so I weathered him up more than planned to hide some of the errors, next time I'll try some tape to keep them more consistent. I'm also dreading painting small fire wasps for him and his buddies.

The colour scheme on the marines is pretty easy though, its basically spray of black undercoat, spray a dark grey from overhead, I use vallejo German Grey, then they get a light-mid drybrush with codex grey. I then paint in the silver details, wash the whole thing with Nuln Oil then paint in the white detail with a small brush and heavily thinned paint. The bases are also quick, I'm using a textured paint, an I run a very watered down mix of it over tracks etc. Then when that is dry, a dark brown and dark red weathering powder is brushed around base, track areas an other places I want to show dirt. This step really helps with the detail although it shows up poorly in the photos. On the bigger tanks I've also sponged on very lightly some silver for wear on the track guards and front armour plates.
I hope you like these, I'll try and get some more done over the coming weeks and post up some better shots.

Lovin it all mate!
It's good to see your Iron Hands getting some more attention :)
The bases are fantastic. How did you paint them?

Very nice work. And, as the others have said, the bases are great. Black can be a tough color to work with and base correctly, but you've chosen a color and theme that really offsets it. It might sound silly to apply such a lofty word in regards to toy soldiers, but that kind of thing is the mark of an artist.

Thanks gents for the kind words. I managed to get some whirlwinds done today - pics shortly but I need an early night tonight in preparation for tomorrow. A dawn service at the war memorial is something not to miss.

And @ dobbsy.. yes I think it was, build out of some spare 1s & 0s :P

Finally, question for the brains trust - has anyone tried the any of the modification bits or proxies off shapeways? what quality is needed for 6mm? There is a sweet looking stand-in for a battle barge I'd like to get.

Oh and for Onyx, basing materiel is:

BA90: Brown Earth Acrylic Basing Mixture
I think its by BASEMASTER - like this but different colour http://www.battlefieldaccessories.com.a ... cts_id=106

Then back-2-base-ix powders, "Grave Brown" and "Earth Red"

Lovely as always. I've been putting off my SoB as I've not come up with a black methodology I liked for ranks. I think you've given me the approach to take on them.

now get those iron hands playtests going! :P

Here's a shot of the updated whirlwinds, these were previously painted in my rushed attempt and were a bit too dirty from the wash, a watery layer of the base coat "German Grey" seems to have helped tone the weathering back a bit.

Image

These were made with spare whirlwind launchers and some spare rhino hulls, I was surprised how badly cast the GW metals were, a lot of cutting and cleaning was required on the sides, in particular the recessed armour panels.

The other thing I've tried here is some grey banding to break up the black a bit, I noticed in Forgeworld's book Massacre, they use a lot of grey and metallic panels or banding to make the iron hands a little more distinctive. I think it works well here and I'll be using it on some of the other tanks. I also realise now looking at the shots thats I haven't painted any of the headlights or lenses.. oh well.

Geoff,

Great looking stuff mate, keep it coming. I really hate the big pieces of flashing on the front of GW hulls. Whats next on the painting table mate?

Cheers
Aaron
