Starting a little late, here, but I've been busy the last few weeks, so I'll be catching up :)

I've been scrounging bits for a Tyranid army for quite a long while, and finally gathered enough for an army. Tyranids were my first real 40K army, and this is a bit like returning to my roots.

I'll be going back in time a little, here, starting March 24., with the models collected, assembled and ready for priming:

The Dominatrix, with a few gaunts to let her spawn.

Image

Regular swarm. I prefer Hive Tyrants over Warriors, but then I really have to include other AVs to prevent its untimely demise.

Image

Regular swarm, slower, but with shooting and AA

Image

Same regular swarm with shooting and AA. I expect these will form a second wave when they catch up, and can then use the long-range gun for prep fire on the way in.

Image

This is an even faster swarm, mounting an all INF swarm in Malefactors to get to speed 25, with equally fast Trygons to take out hard targets. A bit expensive, of course...

Image

Harridan and a complement of Gargoyles.

Image

Lictors

Image

Exocrines, expected to do garrison and overwatch duty to let the swarms advance unmolested.

Image

Genestealers. Possible scout screen. I have no model for a Broodlord, and I'm not really sure what to do about it...

Image

Hierodule, converted from a Dominatrix and some 28mm scale guns.

Image

Hierophant

Image

Dactylis, for artillery and garrison overwatch

Image

A few Carnifexes, to supplement or replace the Haruspexes.

Try the old 40k Genestealer Familiar. They pop up on evil bay on a fairly regular basis (of course now that I've said that they'll be as rare as unicorns)

That, and/or priced as if they were made of gold... I just saw three, at £20 + £9 postage, which I think is a bit steep for three character upgrades ::) But you're right, they look the part.

Meanwhile, dialing the time machine forwards to April 3, where the weather here in Copenhagen finally warmed to the extent that I could take the spraycan outside for some priming:

Dialing the time machine forward a bit more, on April 10th I had the two first painted minis ready:

I'm using the same fast and messy batch-painting scheme as I used for my 28mm Tyranids; plenty of drybrush and wash, not too much fine brushwork.

imposing horde of models there, I like the colour scheme, although for me the yellow eyes don't work very well..... I'd suggest giving them a wash of a deep colour to darken them and add some delineation and make them stand out less, right now they're less like malevolent glowing eyes and more like mirror shades..... just my opinion of course, they look great anyway! :)

There can't be enough Tyranids on this board! ^_^

Very interesting idea converting a Dominatrix into a Hierodule!

What colour will you base them with?

Moving up to April 11th, then, and the first small swarm done:

That's what I was aiming for, indeed. Nice turn of phrase.

I think the eyes are already really hard to see at normal tabletop distances; I'd like the eyes to work at spot colors, and actually be visible on every model (that have eyes). Of course, it may just be my advancing years and failing eyesight, needing them so large ;)

Um, they are based. I think actual sand does a decent job of being sand-colored, and they match the 28mm army based the way they are.

No worries, you're not the first to call me on my shortcuts :) It's a from after I learned that basing looks good, but before I had any patience to actually do something decorative. Paint, glue, sand & rocks was a fast solution.

Moving right along, to April 13th, where the Hierodule was completed:

It's no spider-bug, but it does have right loadout - big long-range gun, shortrange splinter scatterguns, massive talons - and the right size (same 4DC as the Dom). It also looks sufficiently distinctive that it won't be confused with the Dom.

Catching up, one day at a time - April 14th, the second swarm musters:

(larger image, that really shows the shortcuts and deficiencies ::) )

For the Broodlord Onslaught miniatures might do something that fits its also a good place to get more epic bugs of the right size. http://www.onslaughtmini.com/

Agreed; If I was building a new Tyranid army, that would be my go-to source. I'm looking forward to the Onslaught hybrids, too, I have an Insurgency project that could use them...

Dialing the time machine a little forward, to April 15th, the third swarm, and a formation of Exocrines are done:

Image
(larger)

This swarm has no Gun bugs, so it moves a little faster; Its intended role is vanguard assault, probably dying horribly, but softening the enemy for the slower first and second swarms' impact.

Image
(larger)

Garrison forward on overwatch, protecting the turn 1 advance.
