Why the love affair is over.....

kyussinchains —14 August, 2011 - 21:50

This is just a drop in the ocean of disgruntled GW customers, but I've finally had enough.... I've been collecting and playing GW games for around 20 years now, I loved the backstory, the miniatures and even the rules I am not a regular player, although during my teenage years I did play my buddy down the road most sundays, and often headed to games night on a thursday, I'm the guy who only plays 10-20 games a year, which is why I like to make them count.... I had a regular group of guys, pretty much like brothers really, who would get together initially in the school holidays for weeks at a time, and later when people had jobs and real lives, for the occasional long weekend over a bank holiday.... this was just enough, I lived my life leaping from gaming lily pad to gaming lily pad.... I had something to look forward to and plan for This all changed when one guy got a job in the states.... he was one of the main guys, the one who rarely flaked and was always up for a game.... we tried getting together without him, but one guy totally bailed on us, he kept ducking my reminders and come the saturday of the big meet up at warhammer world, we went to pick him up from his mum's house only to find that he was still 100 miles away in london, in bed.... that was just after 8th edition was released, alhough I was guarded about the rule changes, I tried to be open minded, I picked up the big new rulebook and loved the format and style, scenarios, battle reports, house rules, it had the lot Then I played my first game..... not good, rules were a little clunky and I felt imbalanced, big slug fests between two big units, a war of attrition, overpowered magic.... for the first time in 20 years and 4 editions (including the reboot that was 6th edition) I didn't enjoy playing warhammer.... I was nervous and worried, but over time that has been replaced with indifference.... now GW has ruined things in multiple ways 1. The huge monsters.... now I've had the capability to run a double hydra list since the Dark Elf book game out, but I didn't do it every game..... the HPA became ubiquitous round the local clubs and was joined rapidly by that spider thing..... the huge monsters just don't fit the atmosphere of the game for me... 2. Storm. of .magic..... nuff said really.... they took an already overpowered magic system and turbo boosted it..... I like a game where I'm not putting away 50 miniatures per turn personally.... plus the ignorance of background (High elves with summoned daemons??) and the awful, mcdonalds happy meal toy monsters have really turned me off 3. Finecast.... now I'm not arguing about model quality, but it was done ostensibily to compensate for the rising prices of metal..... if this is the case, why are they charging more? The weird thing is that I don't miss it, this was a gradual shift rather than an overnight realisation, GW are a company I no longer feel I want to support, their pricing policy (including the southern hemisphere embargo, which is disgusting in itself) where they charge what they feel a product is worth and expect customers to pay the stupid prices (£2.50 for a plastic greatsword??) the disregard for the regular customers in favour of leeching money from new players, and the abandoning of the specialist games have all conspired to make me quit warhammer.... I intend to keep playing with what I have, although I will sell off as much as I can get away with for now, I also intend to spend a few hundred on getting my epic armies finished and then I can draw a line under it.... I'll probably just drop a wad when they release the limited edition boxed games in september so I can profiteer from them on ebay..... there you have it :) peace
